フィリス・ハイマンの未発表曲

アタシが歌うフィリスの曲、聞きなさい

　こんな曲があったのですね、フィリスが書いたけれども、彼女自身の歌ではまだ発表されていないものが…。MERCEDES HALL*1という女優兼歌手の方の1999年のアルバム「SOMEWHERE IN THE NIGHT」*2に「WHERE IS THE LOVE TONIGHT」という、フィリス・ハイマン(Phyllis Hyman)が作者にクレジットされている曲を見つけました。共作者はNoel CohenとDaryl Hairになっていて、フィリスの死後、1995年に追悼盤として出された「I REFUSE TO BE LONELY」に収録の「IT TAKES TWO」を書いた同じトリオの作です。また「IT TAKES TWO」のコピーライト取得が1994年となっていたので、この曲も同時期に書かれたものではないかと推測されます。
　メルセデス(マーセデス)・ホールが歌うこの「WHERE IS THE LOVE TONIGHT」ですが、サウンド、歌詞ともに、そのままヴォーカル部分だけをフィリスに換えたら、「I REFUSE TO BE LONELY」のアルバムに入っていてもまったく違和感がない仕上がりとなっています。もしかしたら、フィリスも生前録音済みなのかもしれません。デモテープだけでも、どこかに残っているとか…？フィリス・マニアとしては、これからのリリースに期待したいところです。メルセデス(マーセデス)・ホールのこのアルバム自体も出来が良くて、お勧めです。
